Language and Communication

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

Communication is the act of using words, sounds, signs or behaviour to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings etc to someone else (merriam-webster.com)

WHAT IS LANGUAGE?

Language is the system of words or signs that people use to express thoughts and feelings to each other (merriam-webster.com). Language is made up of two parts: receptive language and expressive language.

Receptive language is the ability to understand or comprehend language heard or read.

Expressive language is the ability to put thoughts into words ad sentences in a way that makes sense and is grammatically accurate. It does not necessarily have to be through a verbal means e.g. sign language, computer generated

Language ability is a significant skill for adolescents as it impacts not only on learning but also on social communication including the ability to effectively navigate complex social situations which involve problem solving and negotiation skills (Larson & McKinley, 2003).
