SELF STUDY MODULE 1:
THE CONNECTION BETWEEN LANGUAGE, BEHAVIOUR AND LEARNING
AIM: This module provides information about the important connection between language and behaviour as well as how language difficulties may impact on a student ability to learn.
Strategies to assist teaching students with language impairments (diagnosed and undiagnosed) will be provided.
RATIONALE: Emotional/behavioural difficulties and language difficulties commonly co-occur together with estimates of co-existence rates at between 40-90% (Benner, Nelson & Epstein, 2002).
OUTCOMES: At the end of this module you should be able to:
- Explain the difference between communication, receptive language and expressive language.
- Explain the connection between behavioural difficulties and language difficulties.
- Explain why oral language/narratives are an important tool for learning and can impact on behaviour.
- Identify three strategies you can use in the classroom to cater for students who have/may have language difficulties.
- Be able to implement these three strategies when teaching your classroom curriculum.
